Best Places to Stay

Let’s get real. If you’re like most people, the real deciding factor about where you’re gonna stay has to do with price, so instead of breaking this page down in the typical fashion – by location, I’ve decided to list my personal recommendations of the best places to stay in Maui with kids based upon price.

Maui MandalayMAUI MANDALAY (excellent choice for larger families)
Website: http://www.vrbo.com/183250
Owner’s Phone: (415) 742-0678
Location: Lahaina, Maui
Room types: 4 bedroom private home. Sleeps 8 comfortably. Max. 12.
Average Price: $500 – $1200 per night
Highlights: Renting a home as opposed to staying in a hotel or multiple condo units is an extremely economical way to travel with a large family. Maui Mandalay is well-maintained with higher end decor and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is located on a quiet street 5 minutes (walking) from downtown Lahaina, and is only steps from Baby Beach, considered by most to be the best beach on Maui for families with small children.

places to stay on maui - Kaanapali BeachKAANAPALI BEACH HOTEL
Website: www.kbhmaui.com
Location: Kaanapali, Maui
Room types: Large hotel-rooms. Sleeps 4. Mini fridge, coffee-maker. Rooms can be connected.
Average Price: starting from $150 – $225 per night
Highlights: In addition to being situated on one of Hawaii’s best beaches (it was actually voted #1 Beach in the World in 2003), Kaanapali Beach Hotel has the “Aloha Passport for Kids” program. This program is NOT a babysitting service or kids camp. Parents don’t drop their kids off somewhere for the day. But the Aloha Passport” program does offer some interesting cultural learning opportunities for the whole family like hula lessons, flower lei making, Hawaiian printmaking, and of course Hawaiian language tips. Children aged 12 and under receive a special “passport” inviting them to try Hawaiian activities at various “destinations” throughout the hotel. At each “destination,” their passport is stamped. When it’s full, kids get a special prize.

places to stay with kids in MauiASTON KAANAPALI SHORES
Website: www.astonhotels.com/resort/overview/aston-kaanapali-shores
Location: Kaanapali, Maui
Room types: Hotel rooms, studios, and 1-2 bedroom condos with full kitchens.
Average price: starting from $150 – $290 per night
Highlights: Large units with full kitchens, beachfront restaurant, WiFi, spa facilities & kids camp. Suites have in-room laundry facilities. For an additional fee, kids 5-12 can take part in Camp Kaanapali. All day and evening programs available. One caveat. Birds nest in some of the trees near the entrance and can make an unholy racket in the early morning. But if you plan on getting a unit with an ocean view you’ll be on the other side and this probably wont be a problem.

It’s a great way for mom and dad to get a couple of hours at the spa! Dining options at Napili Kai are also excellent. In addition to having their own fine dining restaurant, Napili Kai has the “Makai Hale” snack bar right next to the main pool that serves lunch and snacks. Kids eat free from the Keiki Menu when accompanied by a paying adult (Psst… I think that’s their way to make sure that parents eat with their kids!)
